China Beach
You should remember that China Beach is the name of a well-known American dramatic television series which was set at an evacuation hospital. The time was a rather sad period in the American history - the Vietnam War. The title of the series refers to a beach located in the city of Da Nang, Vietnam. This place was nicknamed China Beach by foreigners who got familiar with the place. This ABC TV drama went on for three years and included four TV seasons, from 1988 to 1991.
China Beach was created by William Broyles, Jr. and John Sacret Young. The series has a rather unique perspective on the Vietnam War, namely that of the women, either military or civilian, who were present at the time of the conflict.
The cast of characters comprises US Army doctors and nurses, soldiers, officers, Red Cross volunteers, as well as American, French, and Vietnamese civilian personnel. The series features the experiences of the characters after their return to the USA, sometimes on leave and some other times at the end of their tour of duty. The show offers a rather gritty view of the experiences that American had during the war.
The show did not shy away from showing the gruesomeness of war, providing a very gritty view of the experience there. The truthfulness of the scenes and the atmosphere of the show are partly due to the advice that the producers got from nurses who had worked in Vietnam during that time.
The story-telling methods were rather unusual sometimes. Scenes were presented in reverse chronology and there were animated cartoons inserted to express some characters’ state of mind.
China Beach was not a very well rated series but critics thought highly of it. So, if you are willing to see it, you may get yourself a China beach DVD or even better resolution variants like the China Beach Bluray. It will certainly bring you much joy to see some of the actors and remember the times when the Americans were real heroes day and night, their problems, torments and nightmares. Blu-Ray is the best format you can turn to for perfect image.
