DEAN MARTIN TV Series-The development

If someone has a serious bit of memory and can hold up things for some considerable amount of time, he or she will surely come up with an elegant and pleasant smile on the face. Yes, the DEAN MARTIN TV Series was that comedy show, which survived for 9 long seasons and was a reason for millions to smile! With 245 episodes, the show was broadcast by NBC and ran from 16 September 1965 to 24 May 1974. This classic comedy went through an interesting phase of development and had some certain ups and downs because of Martin himself.

The initial blow was nothing but the reluctance of Martin who was not very willing to give up the performances he delivered in the nightclubs and movies. The thing that was more disturbing was Martin's demand for high salary. Adding to the drama was the condition that he would only show up for the taping of the show! But, the unexpected happens. To Martin's utter surprise, the Network bowed down to his demands and left him with no other choice but to comply! This marked the development and the beginning of the popular comedy TV series.

Based heavily on physical comedy, the show gave minimum space for quips. With a very unconventional way of entering the stage (Martin used to slide down the firemen's pole), he was quite reluctant to retake a shot in case of any mistake like skipping a lyrics or even if he fumbled on a dialogue. The weird thing about the entire performance was that, Martin used to read out the script directly from the cue cards and everything that happened on the spot went into the air directly. Martin had a role of a work-shy, drunken playboy who mostly had an old-fashioned glass with apple juice in it most of the time. During the development phase of the show, it was shot using the color tape for the first time in 1965. This event took place in Burbank where NBC's color complex Studio 4 is located.

Undoubtedly, it can be said that the development of the show was full of some serious problems but surely, the path Martin chose was kind of a blessing in disguise.
