Some Less Known Facts About Dean Martin

Dean Martin had an elevator phobia. He loved comic books, which he read throughout his entire life. He also used to love to watch old westerns on TV.

He used to be a boxer and won twenty-five fights out of the thirty-six he was in. As a boxer, he fought under the name of Dino Crocetti and sometimes used the nickname Kid Crochet.

He was rumored to have drunk a lot of alcohol while on stage. In fact, his son Dino revealed that most of the stuff he drank was actually apple juice. Off-stage, he liked to drink Jack Daniels.

He was a good friend of Frank Sinatra's and he cared a lot for that friendship. They didn't speak for some time after Dean Martin quit Rat Pack Reunion, but reconciled over a dinner a short while before Martin's death.

His friends believed he was an easygoing person who loved humor and laughter. He was also very introverted at times and it was hard to tell what he was thinking of. Then he was rather quiet and preferred being alone.

Dean Martin was not the kind of person who partied all night long. He needed to go to bed early in order to be able to play golf the next morning. He had quite a passion for golf and he once said in an interview that he would have rather been a professional golfer than a comedian or entertainer.

He owned a nightclub during the late '70s and early '80s located in North Bay Village, Florida. The club was called Dino's and was right next to Jilly's, owned by Jilly Rizzo.

He was diagnosed with lung cancer in 1993, which made him finally give up smoking. He actually managed to play for a bit at his 77th anniversary. Doctors recommended him a surgical intervention to his lungs and kidneys, but he refused. He died on Christmas Day, in 1995, due to a respiratory failure. 'Everybody Loves Somebody Sometimes', the title of one of Dean Martin's famous songs, is written on his grave.
