The legendary Comedy-Variety: DEAN MARTIN show
Perhaps one of the most enjoyable and Comedy-Variety shows that survived for nearly a decade through 16 September 1965 to 24 May 1974 was the DEAN MARTIN show. What distinguished the show was the flippant attitude of the legendary host Dean Martin and just to add up, the non-serious approach of Martin was probably the sole reason, which helped to bring the best out of the co-actors and the performers of that era. The relaxed attitude of the host himself was the sole reason that pulled out the best from the on-stage performers. Undeniably, the show was a safe harbor even during the political turmoil and eminent host tried to ease out thing by smoking on the camera and cracking jokes that made everyone giggle. The formula was simple and down to earth. The host was truly accessible and even when he was the naughtiest, he was purely family-friendly and the best part was that he was without malice against anyone. The structure of the comedy show was a simple one and used to open with the solo "Everyone Loves Somebody". The song was a stunning hit that knocked down the Beatles out of the number one position on the pop chart. Entry of Martin on to the stage after the opening bars was a bit hilarious by nature as the host used to slide down the firemen's pole followed by a pop number, a couple of or more jokes and finally introduced the guests. During the entire runtime of the show, solo numbers were performed by the musical guests and then followed by a duet with Dean. Every single episode of the show had a surprise guest who and surprisingly enough, even Dean did not know about him. The surprise guest was the show highlight. A big production number always marked the end of the show and the finishing touch was given by the host who always thanked the audiences and the guests with a soothing smile on his face. No doubt, Martin contributed a lot to NBC and the Network rewarded him with a very lucrative contract. Martin was one of the greatest television stars of his time. |
