Third Watch

To those who remember Third Watch, the NBC television drama which was set in beautiful and busy New York City, the Third Watch DVD (or, for the modern man and woman into fashion, the Third Watch Bluray) is something most of us would really like to own. The series, aired from 1999 to 2005, followed the exploits or adventures of a community of police officers, firefighters, as well as paramedics working in the fictional 55th Precinct and Fire Station 55 whose shifts began at 3 p.m. and ended at 11 p.m.

Originally the show was created to involve only thee police and paramedics, but later firefighter Jimmy Doherty was added to the show. Thus, the series started revolving around the three main emergency services.

Since the precinct and fire station were both located on the corner of King St. and Arthur St., the nickname Camelot was born, but the filming took place somewhere in Queens.

Third Watch managed to present all three branches of New York's emergency services in one and the same show. In this way, it succeeded in reviving a failed attempt to do so with the similarly-themed series H.E.L.P. which only ran for one season in 1990.

The theme of the series can gather together various audiences and this is exactly what it did. If you are interested in what kind of work policemen, firefighters and E.R. doctors have to deal with in a city like New York, watching this series is all you need to make a fair opinion.

Some people said there was too much violence in the series and also much profane language. The truth is the episodes are fairly naturally-flowing and the characters couldnít be more real. However, the series was also lauded for the emotional portrayal of the events around September 11th and the terrorist attacks connected to that date. The theme of the song is also very suggestive: ëKeep Hope Aliveí by The Chrystal Method.

There is a nice balance between episodes which contain a single event and those which have ongoing storylines, so you may as well be rather disappointed not to find out the ending of a case in one episode. This is a good reason for you to acquire the Third Watch Blu-Ray and watch it at your own pace.
